I’ve recently renewed my contract with O2 and this week I switched tariffs from iPhone 30 to Simplicity for Smartphones 10.
| iPhone 30 | Simplicity for Smartphones 10 + Data & Wifi bolt-on |
Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inclusive Minutes | 75 | 300 | +225 |
| Text Messages | 125 | Unlimited | +∞ |
| Data + Wifi | Unlimited | Unlimited | same |
| Monthly cost | £30 | £15 | -£15 |
I’m now paying £15 per month for 300 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data compared to £30 per month previously for 75 mins, 125 texts and unlimited data on the old iPhone 30 tariff – so I’m getting 225 more minutes and infinitely more texts for half the price!
I did find it quite difficult to find this option on the website (it’s called Simplicity for Smartphones – 12 month tariff) – they are pushing the Simplicity for iPhone contracts instead which as I see the only difference relates to voicemail functionality. There’s no visual voicemail if you choose the Simplicity for Smartphone option whereas you get visual voicemail if you choose Simplicity for iPhone. If you do choose the Simplicity for Smartphone tariff as I did then your inclusive minutes are used for voicemail calls after which you have to pay 20p/min. As I’ve only got about half a dozen voicemails in the last 18 months and as I may be changing handsets soon I am not so fussed on paying £5 extra per month for the visual voicemail feature – it’s a great idea but I don’t believe it’s worth paying extra for.
The whole process was done within an hour using the upgrade online feature which was very convenient and simple – I kept my old number and I didn’t need a new SIM card. The only thing I had to do was change my data APN and MMS APN settings – and these instructions were automatically sent to me in a text message which was also very convenient!
To change your settings for you iPhone to work with Simplicity for Smartphones go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network
- Change Cellular Data APN to mobile.o2.co.uk
- Change MMS APN to wap.o2.co.uk
Then restart your iPhone and voila it works!
So I’m still using my iPhone 3G handset as I decide which phone is going to replace it. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts I don’t want another iPhone as I need more flexibility and functionality than it currently offers or likely ever will. If only there was an iPod solution for Android that would allow me to rate my music… apparently this may soon be reality as DoubleTwist are working on music rating synchronisation for their next release so I hope to be switching to Android very soon… watch this space!
