Hurricane Irene
After my flights to NC got cancelled on Thursday I’m now staying in NYC for Hurricane Irene – as I type it’s just under 300 miles away and the latest advice I’ve heard is to stay indoors from 9pm tonight.
Our apartment is located in Zone C, which means that there may be potential flooding from a Category 3-4 hurricane hitting south of NYC, however we are just 700ft from Zone A, the mandatory evacuation zone!
Google have updated their Crisis Response website with useful information about the hurricane displayed as layers on Google maps.
The supermarket items that have sold out appear to be water, crisps, batteries and flashlights and checkout queues were the longest I’ve ever seen with the queues stretching round multiple aisles in many supermarkets I visited on Friday evening.
On Wall St, all flags have been removed and there were only a handful of tourists about compared to a normal Saturday which tends to be quite busy. Sandbags have been placed around the NYSE – they are in the same zone as our apartment.
The latest is that we have been advised that they may be shutting down the electricity in our neighbourhood to prevent damage to sensitive equipment!
Plenty of food and water to keep us going for several days so we will be grand!
